Brothers and Sisters, in this week’s meeting I breakdown the third short of Dipper’s Guide to the Unexplained: The Mailbox.
There are four big secrets hidden in this short, and the first is fairly obvious. When The Mailbox delivers it’s first message, we see a wax seal that protects the letter. Wax seals were one of the first forms of data encryption, because if the delicate wax was damaged before the letter reached its recipient, then they would know that it had been opened before it reached them!
The wax seal from the letter The Mailbox in Dipper’s Guide to the Unexplained sent had an image of the ouroboros impressed in it. This makes sense, since the The Mailbox has seemingly infinite knowledge, and the symbol can also represent “infinity”.
We also learn from a question that Dipper asked The Mailbox, when the “end of the world” will be in Gravity Falls. The relatively distant year 3012. Since we’ve met Blendin Blandin from the year twenty sneventy twelve, we know that some people will survive the “end of the world” – but it may be at a terrible cost. The few shots we’ve seen from that time show existence as an empty white void.
We have seen an alternate point from Gravity Falls future – a distant future war where a battle ravaged city fights with or against the Time Baby. Could this be the year 3012 that the The Mailbox warns of?
And finally we learn two important things about Soos. Firstly that he’s a believer in Paleocontact – the belief that aliens have helped shape human society in the past. And Secondly, we learn that Dipper and Mabel have trusted Soos with what they know about the Journals. It’s very possible that Soos knows more about the journals and is keeping that information secret.
Four big secrets revealed, but what do you think? Leave your theories and suggestions in the comments below!
