Welcome brothers and sisters to this week’s meeting of the Royal Order of the Holy Mackerel!

In this meeting I discuss Dipper’s Guide to the Unexplained #6, Anomaly #132: The Hidebehind!

Challenge 28

In this meeting of the Royal Order of the Holy Mackerel we investigate the final short of Dipper’s Guide to the Unexplained, Anomaly #132: The Hide Behind.

The first secret that’s revealed in The Hide Behind is the flying saucer keychain that Mabel uses to make a dramatic spooky sound effect. This is a subversive nod to the now known fact that flying saucers will play a part in the story of season 2!

The second secret we discover is the Maraca Owl. We know that Owls represent Secret Societies in Gravity Falls, so the use of the Maraca Owl, an owl that hides the truth by distracting investigators, is symbolic of Secret Societies that work to covertly cover up secrets and distract people from the truth.

The third secret in Dipper’s Guide to the Unexplained 06 – The Hide-Behind is the format of the short itself! Anomaly #132 is presented in a Tabloid format. Tabloid Journalism is a style of video production that emphasizes flashy graphics, narrative hosts, sensational storylines, and interviews where the interviewer is off camera. This style of video production was popular in the 80s and 90s and became famous for stories featuring the paranormal and extraterrestrials.

The final secret of this short is the Hide Behind! The creature is based off a legend started by lumberjacks in the Great Northwest. Though it’s hard to say when this story started, the first recorded occurrence of the legendary Hidebehind comes from the 1939 book Fearsome Critters by Henry Harrington Tryon. He describes the Hidebehind as a tallish slender creature with grizzly bear like claws and a pelt like a black sheepdog. It’s favorite meal is intestines, but you can keep it at bay by drinking beer – because it makes your insides taste gross.

But what do you think? Will the Hide Behind play a larger part in the second season? Will it be revealed as an alien life form? What is it’s connection to the flying saucer? Leave your theories and suggestions in the comments below!
