This week I break down the story elements of the second episode of the second season of Gravity Falls, Into The Bunker. There’s a lot to cover in this episode, so let’s dig in.
The story takes place right on the heels of the events of Scary-oke, and Grunkle Stan bribes a foreman to buy his Giant Woodpecker story. The foreman accepts and the Mystery Shack stays on the level and below the radar.
Into The Bunker also provides more evidence to the fact that Wendy’s mother is missing. We don’t know why she’s not with the Corduroy family. Wendy’s mom could have left in a divorce, or her work keeps her away from Gravity Falls – whatever the reason, we know that the Corduroy’s look to Wendy to fill the void her mother left.
We also learn that the Author of the Journals created a Fallout Shelter to weather out a terrible apocalypse. Thanks to clues left behind by the Author, we know that they planned to use it starting the in 1982 – the same year Grunkle Stan started working on the portal! Whatever happened that fateful year narrowly saved the world from some terrible apocalypse!
The shapeshifter in Into The Bunker also makes it clear that, unless Dipper stops his quest for the truth, he may be doomed to repeat the mistakes of the past… only this time, he may not be able to dodge the apocalypse.
Into The Bunker also brings closure to Dipper’s crush on Wendy. His feelings were finally revealed, and although this left him feeling scared because he feared he may lose Wendy as a friend, Wendy put those fears to rest. The two of them know each other much better now, and their friendship is tighter for it. Wendy may not want a romantic relationship with Dipper, but they’re still friends.
But what do you think? Leave your theories and suggestions in the comments below!
