This week I break down the story elements and the secrets of the third episode of Gravity Fall’s second season, The Golf War!
The story of The Golf War centers around a showdown between Mabel and Pacifica at Ye Royal Discount Putt Hut – a local mini golf amusement park in Gravity Falls. It turns out that each of the themed holes are inhabited by little critters called LilliPUTTians (a play on the Lilliputians from Gulliver’s Travels). Mabel uses their ages long feud to her advantage and cheats to beat Pacifica. Things escalate though, and the Lilliputtians capture and try to kill Pacifica for Mabel’s approval. They easily break free and escape, and after a heartfelt apology, Pacifica and Mabel leave things off on better terms.
The key story element of The Golf War was Pacifica’s character development – and we now know that she has exacting parents that demand perfection from her, but that want for perfection stems more from a place of needing society to see them as perfect. This is reflected in the scene where her parents demand that she not lose, but leave her to spend time at a party.
The Golf War also has a lot of firsts, including the first character interaction with Pitt soda, the first traditional handgun shown/fired on screen, and the first on screen death. The death of Big Henry was crafted to show the audience that Alex and his team can and are willing to kill off heroes in Gravity Falls. A BIG leap for those who worry that Disney censors the show too much!
The Golf War also two codes hidden within it. The keyword for the Vigenere Cipher is WHATEVS, and it unlocks the following message in the end credits code: REMEMBER BIG HENRY.
The Golf War’s end card also has two codes on it that can be cracked with the Combination Cipher – and they decode to OLD MAN SLEEPING ON THE GREEN / CAN’T HELP BUT WONDER WHAT HE’S SEEN.
But what do you think? Leave your theories and suggestions in the comments below!
