In this meeting of The Royal Order of the Holy Mackerel, I investigate the recently released trailer for Gravity Falls Season 2 Episode 12, A Tale Of Two Stans!
In this week’s meeting of the Royal Order of the Holy Mackerel I break down the entire episode of A Tale Of Two Stans. A thrilling episode that asked more questions than it answered.
The largest reveal of A Tale Of Two Stans was the fact that Grunkle Stan is in fact Stanley Pines, the less bookish con man brother of the real Stanford Pines. Stanford, as we learn, has been lost to the portal for roughly 30 years – and his accident happened during a scuffle between the brothers over Journal #1.
A Tale Of Two Stans also gives us proof that Stan’s Tattoo is in fact a brand on his right shoulder caused by slamming against a console near the portal machine. This does not rob the sigil of its symbology, but it does mean that Grunkle Stan doesn’t know what it means.
We’re also introduced formally to more members of the Pines family tree. Filbrick Pines is Stanford and Stanley’s taciturn father, and their mother is a fake phone psychic with a knack for lying and hucksterism. A Tale Of Two Stans also introduces “Shermy” Pines – most likely a shortening of Sherman Pines – the younger brother of Stan and Ford.
A Tale Of Two Stans also establishes more information about Fiddleford McGucket’s accident, and gives us a frightening new prophecy: “When Gravity Falls and Earth are both sky, fear the beast with just one eye”. A worrisome look to the future – especially when there are so many established characters with only one eye!
With how many singular moments in the past set major events into motion in the future, it’s no surprise that we discover that Blendin Blandin has been working behind the scenes around the time Stan and Ford discover the sailboat for the first time.
Though we now have a more detailed understanding of Grunkle Stan’s backstory, there are still large amounts of time unaccounted for in Grunkle Ford’s half of the story. A Tale Of Two Stans presents only one side of events – and there’s still a lot we don’t know about! But these are just my theories! Agree? Disagree?
