Welcome once again, Crying Breakfast Friends! Stars In Our Eyes continues, this time reviewing and analyzing Steven Universe Season 1 Episode 2, Laser Light Cannon!

Laser Light Cannon is basically the second half of the first episode, working to quickly establish the world of Steven Universe. But while Gem Glow focused on exposing the insular and private world of Garnet, Pearl, and Amethyst – Laser Light Cannon focuses on humanity – and what role it will play in the unfolding events of the show!

From the very Earthly threat to Beach City, to Greg’s imperfect perfection – Laser Light Cannon primary function is to show that humanity can deal with the magical and extraterrestrial threats made on a day-to-day basis and roll with those punches. They won’t fall to pieces over perceived impending doom – they move on with their lives. Humanity is more concerned with the safety of their vans and having to rebuild a shop sign than they are a global threat like the Red Eye.

Laser Light Cannon also establishes Greg Universe, the father of Steven Universe. Greg is a simple man who runs a modest car wash in town and lives out of his custom van. Most of his belongings are packed up in a storage unit, which he has not opened in years – likely because of the feelings of loss connected to them. His car wash “It’s A Wash” is a subtle hint that he may not have made it big in music, but was able to find a way to stay in town and support himself so he could stay close to his son, Steven Universe.

In the end, it’s Rose Quartz’ love of humanity’s imperfection that saves the day. Reinforcing the themes of the episode. That even though you may not be perfect, you still have value and worth.
